In the 1920s the first automobile Concours d’Elegance events were held in France and then Italy. Here the most elegant cars and fashion met in very exquisite settings. In Italy it was a 16th century resort, the Villa d’Este which hosted these events. In the 1990s the Concours d’Elegance was resurrected again at Villa d’Este. In 1999 BMW became Patron and since 2005 the German carmaker helps in the organisation as well. Today the Villa d’Este Concorso Eleganza is a series of events, which was held this year between 20-22 May. On Saturday the international jury, VIP guests and the media were able to see the cars at Villa d’Este and a separate motorcycle exhibition at the nearby Villa Erba. On Sunday the public had the chance to look at both cars, motorcycles and a thematic exhibition by BMW at Villa Erba.
The Villa Erba had a picnic vibe with deckchairs, buffets. Unfortunately motorcycles were not attracted as big a crowd, though there were quite a few interesting machines, including a Czech Böhmerland,
a German Megola and a French Majestic – all showing different ideas. Best of Show went to a 1929 Grindlay-Peerless 100

It was the cars which held captive most of the audience. This year the selecting committee chose 52 cars, which were grouped into 9 categories. A 10th category was reserved for brand new concept cars and prototypes.

Best of Show by Public Referendum at Villa d’Este” was voted to a 1933 Lancia Asturia Serie II with aerodynamic body by Castagna which was originally comissioned Vittorio Mussolini, son of Benito. The current owner spent 8 years restoring the car. The oldest car was a 1920 Delage from Austria, while the car coming from the farthest distance was the ex-Clint Eastwood Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB, which travelled from Thailand. The award for the „Best Preserved Vehicle” went to a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Coupé – only one half of the vehicle was painted the other was left in its original state. The Best of Show Award was given to a 1954 Maserati A6 GCS, which participated at the 1955 Mille Miglia race.
